Forget about restructuring, Boko Haram, Nigerian governors are the problem

by Tosin Adesina

Recently, there have been unending agitations for Nigeria’s restructuring across all ethnic divides in the country. For the Northerners that believe in restructuring, Waziri of Adamawa Atiku Abubakar is leading the pack here as he has maintained on several occasions how Nigeria’s current structure is not beneficial to his people in the North.

In the south, they are more vocal and united in their restructuring course, with the likes of Mr Ayo Opadokun, Chief Bisi Akande, General Alani Akinrinade, Mr Yinka Odumakin among others. These crop of people believe the development that Nigerians yearn for, will only come through restructuring but they are missing it.

The main problem in this fix that Nigeria finds itself are the people we call Governors, across the entire 36 states of the federation.

Since 1999, Governors elected in several states of the federation have failed to live up to the demands of responsibility of a public office; rather they are the main cog in the wheel of progress.

When they are not spending seven hundred million Naira to buy a new official residence for a traditional ruler in Abuja as found in Sokoto state – Aminu Tambuwal; they will spend one week celebrating their birthday ceremony like Governor Aregbesola, when workers’ salaries are being owed; their tertiary institutions on strike for years.

It means nothing to them at least “eni ko natinti school yin now? in Ajimobi’s voice (this is not the first time your school is being shut). These are coupled with poor performance with lots of abandoned project lying across the state and humongous debt to be paid by unborn generations.

Those that are supposedly beacons of hope among them like Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos are not transparent in their dealings. They will never make the state budget public despite public outcry since 2015 till date. But to him we don’t really need to see the budget at least we can see the bridge in Berger and the lay-by and the Lekki water day celebrations.

The result of poor leadership offered to the masses by those we call Governors is what Nigeria has turned to today, it’s not about Party No! They are the same – the most important thing is their personal interest which is against the general interest of the voters.

The proponents of restructuring need to know that when we restructure you will still have the Tambuwal’s, Aregbesola’s, Wike’s, Abdulaziz Yari’s and Ambode’s at the helm of affairs and the circus continues.

The governors are the problem.
