#Euro2016: France narrowly win against resilient Republic of Ireland

Republic of Ireland hoped for a famous win but a vibrant second half display from the French saw the Irish succumb to a 2-1 defeat during the Round of 16 encounter of Euro 2016.

A clumsy foul by Paul Pogba on Shane Long saw Martin O’Neil‘s men rewarded with a penalty in the second minute of the game and Robbie Brady was on hand to send the underdogs into the lead.

Despite France asking a few questions of the Irish defence, the latter stood firm for a 1-0 lead until half-time.

The second half proved rather different as coach Didier Deschamps replaced the yellow-carded N’golo Kante with a more attack-minded Kingsley Coman.

This change proved decisive as France fired on all cylinders with Dimtri Payet, Antoine Griezmann inspiring the wounded Les Blues and they were rewarded with a double salvo from Griezmann in the 57th and 61st minute.

Republic of Ireland was left blown away and couldn’t recovered from France’s 2nd half display.

France has now proceeded to the Quarterfinals of the competition and will play the winner from the England vs Iceland clash.
