From BQ to Billionaire Geng, this is the second coming of Mr May D

May D

Everybody loves a comeback. We love the idea of a beloved public personality overcoming personal and professional challenges and reassert themselves at the top of their game. It is why we love PSquare and Tuface Idibia and why we were so eager to root for Obesere when his 2000’s hit ‘Egungun Be Careful’ went viral in 2020. And our love for the underdog getting a second chance is why Twitter is going wild with the news that Mr MayD has joined Davido’s music label.

Akinmayokun Awodumila, popularly known as May D, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, and dancer who was formally signed to the R&B duo P-Square record label “Square records”. May D was one artist that many Nigerians swore would become a mega superstar with the release of back-to-back hit songs like Ile-Ijo, Soundtrack, as well as making a killing from his features.

May D is a hitmaker with the ability to shift the culture. A lot of the slangs he popularized are still used in Nigerian pop culture today. But that wasnt enough to keep his career from flaming out and entering the dreaded ranks of one hit wonders.

While no one can exactly pinpoint what happened to (with) the singer, a few controversies and report suggests that some sort of discord ensued with May D and his then record label boss, Jude Okoye.

Things seemed to change for May D after Cynthia Morgan opened up on the reasons why she disappeared from the scene at the height of her popularity. Their individual stories had the same villain – record label boss Jude Okoye.

According to May D, he was used by Jude to achieve a lot for Square records and the Twins (Peter and Paul Okoye), P-Square – May D shared that he wrote albums, singles, and composed songs that earned money for the team and while they made all that money, nothing was given to him. Jude Okoye, however, refuted this claim as he shared that the contracts were followed duly . There is a lot of ambiguity around his exit from Square Records but it is noteworthy that May D claims he was being maltreated by the big boys in Square records, alleging he was made to sleep on cardboard boxes in a Boys Quarters whilst living in a compound with mansions.

Thankfully, those days seem far behind him. May D has been welcomed to Davido’s record label – DMW.

Davido, the DMW boss had earlier expressed his interest in working with Cynthia Morgan who first opened up about the alleged mistreatment at Square Records. As it appears now, May D is set to join the likes Mayorkun, Idowest, Peruzzi Vibes, Dremo, and a host of others and what to be expected of the singer is nothing short of his vocals and creative songwriting skills.

Nigerians had a few things to say about this new development.
