Niger Republic has barred people from wearing the full Islamic veil because of its use in recent terrorist attacks in the country.
“Women in the region are forbidden from wearing the full veil until further notice, in order to prevent suicide attacks by Boko Haram,” Diffa mayor Hankouraou Biri-Kassoum said.
Niger is not the first country to ban the full veil. Cameroon banned it after attacks involving female suicide bombers wearing the garment.
“It’s better to prevent danger, a growing number of women and young girls are wearing the full veil in Diffa,” a security source said.
The mayor said a night-time curfew has also been imposed while February’s ban on motorcycles (the jihadists’ vehicle of choice) has been extended.
