The National Examination Council, NECO and the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME are to be scrapped soon.

Based on the recommendations of the Stephen Oronsaye-led Presidential Committee on the Rationalisation and Restructuring of Federal Government Parastatals, Commissions and Agencies, the federal government has concluded arrangements to cancel the programme.

According to a source, instead of the UTME, authorities of all higher institutions would now be free to conduct their own entrance examinations as they had been doing for post-UTME.

JAMB which was not cancelled will however serve as a clearing house.

“JAMB will now be a clearing house like Universities and Colleges Admissions Service in the UK. If somebody gains admission into three universities and holds down space, immediately such person picks his first choice, JAMB’s system will automatically free the remaining two slots for other applicants.

“JAMB will no longer conduct examinations but it will be setting the standard alongside the schools authorities,” the source said.

According to reports, the government’s decisions, which would be officially announced via a White Paper, resolved that the West African Examination Council would absorb NECO’s members of staff and its facilities.

The Punch reports:

The source added that upon receipt of the latest report, President Goodluck Jonathan has been meeting with Vice-President Namadi Sambo and a few top government officials to take final decisions on it.

It was in one of such meetings held on Tuesday that the final decision was taken.

UCAS, which was established in 1993, is the British admission service for students applying to university and college, including post-16 education as of 2012. UCAS is primarily funded by students who pay a fee when they apply and a capitation fee from universities for each student they accept.

On NECO, the source said in arriving at the decision to scrap the examination body, the committee took into cognizance its huge facilities across the country.

WAEC will also be empowered to conduct two Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations per year, one in January and the other probably in December.

Hitherto, only one November/December SSCE Examination is being conducted.

The May/June Senior Secondary Certificate Examination being organised by the examination body once in a year still stands.

The government source also said arrangements had been concluded to scrap the Public Complaint Commission, the National Poverty Eradication Programme and the Institute of Peace and Conflict Resolution among others.

  8. The fed. Govt. Is clearly confused bcos if they were not they would not think to change a machinery that has functioned for several years……..instead of combating issues like the boko haram menace and poverty eradication they are here sizzling with matters that should not even concern them.it means that the fed. Govt failed to take lessons from the unilag case.

  9. Weda scrapping or nt wat i no iz dat mek diz democratic government no fuckup oh

    1. Abege no bi dat one i day talk, weten be day talk be say i don pay money for regestration,i go still collect my money bk,.me? I won enter business self. Mak day do Anytin day lik

  12. What will happen to those who already own a neco certificate……?

  13. We need God manifestation in dis country called Nigeria. God, let your will be done.

  14. In my own view, this is not a good idea for us in this country… I would like to advice Mr President to cogitate on it very well.

  15. Mr president, dis is not d solution 2 our problems in 9ija scraping neco and jamb will not solve any problem but add 2 it.Mr president sit down and rethink dont allow dis country to go astray.

  16. Hmmmmmmmmm,na waooo Nigeria is going astray ohhhhhhh its a pity. But our next generation woll sufer.

  17. Introduction of NECO is an assasination of standard. Comparing WAEC wit NECO is like a mental hopital where insane dictates the rule. I am not been centimental but d dead too can attest to this. This is d relationship. Sharing of credit in Eng Lang and MathsIt to candidate of NECO has depreciated the value of O’Level result. The efficacy is hw do we control d mammoth crowd of which abt 80.% were products of NECO? So when you don’t have control d product is defective, substandard, error, name them. I do not have NECO result but my younger ones hav. Wake me up in d middle of d night and I wil perform excellently in NECO but for WAEC I need a revition of Maths and Eng Lang. So go FG and scrap NECO. Leave JAMB alone but scrap post UME, it is political, sobbering and my Oga at d Top hummmm

  18. it is on unfortunately decisions are already made by those that have the powers to make the decisions, as for me i like the new implementation

  19. NIGERIA where are we heading to nw? I pity d next generation, infact why are we coping others and later end up in nothing. I believe Mr president never knows this country problem. Ahahahah…… Mr president you hav to sit down and rethink b4 everythings collapse in your own time. JAMB AND NECO is neva d probem this country is facing. This is never a good news.

  20. No matter any style they want to use I belive that God will single me out this year. Amen

  21. So where exactly is our country heading to. Just of recent the NYSC announced that students without JAMB registration number will no longer be posted for NYSC which they have started to implement…now we hear another one…SCRAPPING OF JAMB. So what kind of system are we running in this Nation Nigeria.

  22. This is good idear but what will happen to those who took (neco) that has not gain admission into the university?

  23. I just hope ds guys knows what they are doing bcos any wrong step taken will further bury d already dead educational sector. God save our future.

  24. This is bullshit why we always copy others and at the end such would not work

  25. Hahaha. Confusion! Must we copyt everything from the UK? Confusion galore.
