No Horn Day! ‎Lagos state says no honking on 15th of October

by Kolapo Olapoju

The Lagos state government has set aside Wednesday, 15 October, as a ‘no horn’ day for motorists in the state.

The government has stated that the move is to part of its effort to reduce noise pollution on the roads and to cultivate respect for other road users.

It also disclosed that the ‘no horn’ day would help maintain and encourage road discipline, at the same time improving road use courtesy. The Lagos state government also hopes the initiative would encourage a positive road use attitude from motorists, and developp better road-user friendly Lagosians.

While many have applauded the initiative as impactful, others have questioned the long-term impact it would have on road users and motorists within the state, considering the fact the after the stipulated ‘no horn’ day, status quo would continue among Lagos road users.

Mumbai, the largest city in India, also had a ‘no horn’ day on 7 April, 2008, an initiative which was the first of its kind in the country.

To wrap it up, it is believed that the Lagos State government must have insured all Lagosians and their vehicle for the one day event…
