How I got involved in armed robbery – Suspect confesses (PICTURED)

A 21-year-old student of Rivers State Polytechnic, Akwi Joshua, has been arrested by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of Rivers State Police Command over a robbery incident that led to the death of a young man.

The robbery incident was carried out on November 17 last year, while the arrest was only made recently.

According to crime reports, the deceased, Amaebimo Akada was shot in the head in the presence of his friend simply identified as Thomas. The robbers later carted away valuables like plasma TVs, handsets, jewellery, and cash totaling N200,000.

With the suspicion that Thomas must have known about the attack, especially since he was not shot by the armed gang, he was later handed over to the police by the parents of the victim.

Opening up to the police, Thomas identified one of the robbers as a friend to one Andre who used to patronize his barbing salon – who in turn mentioned the Rivers State Polytechnic undergraduate, Joshua.

In an interview with Crime Reports, Joshua narrated his involvement thus: “It is true I was involved but I can explain the role I played. What really happened was that on November 16, 2014, I received a call from a strange number that I should come to Comfort Bar at Number 10, Harbour Road, Port Harcourt.

“I went to the bar and on getting there, I saw a group of young men. One of them was Letor. I knew him from my childhood days. He is not my mate so I used to accord him respect. I was told to sit and I did, though I was not comfortable. Another member of the group called Jerry said he was the one who called me. I was given drinks and later Jerry said someone gave Letor N500,000 to help him do something, though he did not reveal the thing.

“We were at the bar till 1a.m. the following day which was Sunday. I wanted to go home to prepare towards returning to school that day but Letor said I should follow them to where they were going. They didn’t even tell me what they were going to do, but I later knew it was robbery.

“As we got to Oduah road, opposite Police Children School, we stopped in front of a house and Letor asked me to jump over the fence and help in opening the gate of the house from inside, which I did. There were six of us that day – Jerry, Letum, Wacko, Beebee, Wewe and I.

The group entered the compound and asked me to stand outside the gate. But immediately I heard a gunshot from where they were, I ran off in fear and went back home.

“Contrary to Tom Bee’s  (Thomas) claim that he saw me, I didn’t follow the group in. I only stayed at the gate. Before we went to the place that night, Letor promised that they would give me something. When I went to him for the money he promised, he asked his boys to beat me up and throw me inside the gutter.”

The Police Public Relations Officer in Rivers State, DSP Ahmad Muhammad, confirmed the story, saying that command was on the trail of the suspects at large.
