How over N3 billion was misappropriated in NAMA

More information has emerged in the ongoing corruption investigation of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The Punch Newspapers reports that new fraudulent findings such as the payment of more than N3 billion on shady contracts and projects that weren’t carried out between January 2013 and December 2014, and the spending of over N300 million ‘fictitious, over-invoiced and non-existent foreign travels’, was discovered by the anti-graft agency.

The Managing Director of NAMA, Ibrahim Abdulsalam, and four other officials of the agency, were last week taken in by the EFCC for questioning over allegations of fraudulent activities in the agency.

According to a source at the EFCC, the interrogated officials will help the commission investigate how over N3 billion was allegedly spent by the Director General and his predecessor.

The EFCC had swooped into action following a petition, by an unnamed official at NAMA. The petition was titled: ‘A clarion call for investigation of financial recklessness in the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, which has affected the performance of the agency and provision of efficient safety services.’

The petition had warned that if nothing was done, NAMA “may soon be unable to provide navigation and air traffic services, among other core mandates of the agency, which would affect and compromise tremendously the safety of the flying public.”

Following the accusations and investigation of the agency, the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has appointed a new acting chairman for the agency.
