IG sets up panel to investigate alleged sexual abuse in IDP camps

The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris has set up an investigation team to commence thorough investigation into allegations of rapes, sexual abuses, and exploitation in Internally Displaced Persons Camps in the North-East.

Recall that the Human Rights Watch had released a report alleging that female IDPs in camps in the North East were usually raped and demanded sex from in exchange for food.

In a statement by the Police spokesperson, Dan Awunah, Idris expressed deep concern over the submissions in the report and has directed the Special Investigation Panel to carry out a discreet and unbiased investigation.

The IG also called on Human Right Watch officials to avail the investigation team more facts that will assist the Police investigation team.

The statement said, “The IG, who is irrevocably committed to the protection of all Nigerians most especially vulnerable group such as Internally Displaced persons, has expressed deep concern over the submissions in the report and has directed the Special Investigation Panel to carry out a discreet and unbiased investigation into all the cases of abuse and misconduct alleged in the report.”
