[The Injustice Blog] The opportunity cost of foreign firms in the Nigeria

firms

The federal government in its bid to bring in foreign direct investment into the country over the years has granted licences to several foreign firms to operate in the country. Its argument is that these firms create jobs for its citizens and to shore up its GDP and promote economic stability in the country, however the activities of these companies sometimes has negated their presence.

Despite the fact that Nigeria loose a lot of earnings to capital flight from these companies that make profits in our country, we’ve always give them an enabling environment but what we have in return is below our expectations from these firms.

Their human and labor relations has been harsh to Nigerians than accommodating. Anyone in doubt of this should conduct an independent opinion polls from Nigerians on what they feel about Indians, Chinese, and Lebanese companies in Nigeria. The result will be shocking.

These companies have subjected Nigerians to the highest form of modern day slavery in their own country. From long working hours, low pay, absence of job security and pension among others, their presence hasn’t been in the best interests of Nigerians and it becomes more saddening as these individuals committed lots of abominable acts but they get away with it with support of fellow Nigerians.

In a similaar vein Shell was accused of engaging in massive environmental degradation in the Niger Delta area especially in Ogoni, the same is obtainable for these foreign companies as the right of Nigerians are ignored or even violated by them.

Some of these companies use containers as a means of transporting Nigerians from one state to another, lumping them up like bags of rice yet the necessary quarters especially FRSC has failed to stop this inhuman means of transportation. These same individuals transport their foreign colleagues in Air conditioned buses while Nigerians are moved in containers.

Another foreign company(name withheld) at the moment is sand filling the oworonshoki water front without engaging in the necessary environmental CSR as it concerns people affected by the sand filling in the other end of oworo and bariga.

All these anti people acts of these foreign companies should be checked in the best interests of Nigerians.
