Internet love scam: EFCC arraigns man for ‘defrauding American lady of $25,000’

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday arraigned a 25-year-old man, Nifemi Ayinla, before a Lagos High Court in Ikeja for allegedly defrauding an American lady, Gina McCoy of $25,000, through an internet love scam scheme.

Ayinla was arraigned by the EFCC before Justice Kudirat Jose on a four- count charge of possession of false documents and obtaining money by false pretences.

Counsel to the commission, Taqiyudeen Aribi, alleged that the defendant, posing as one Andrew Edmund, an Italian American businessman, made love proposal to McCoy through messages send through the internet.

According to Aribi the defendant, between January and May 2013, in Lagos obtained $25,000 from the American under the guise of using it to finish his project in Nigeria where he claimed to be on a business trip.

The lawyer also claimed that the accused also had in his possession, documents containing false pretenses with numerous fraudulent scam emails, used in facilitating the fraud.
