Last week saw the political audience across the world torn in separate directions as the United States and the United Kingdom witnessed defining moments in their political terrain. The UK general elections held on the same day as former FBI Director, James Comey’s hearing about the Trump/Russia affair before the Senate Intelligence Committee.
Back here in Nigeria, something powerful (and we mean this literally) has taken over the internet and Senator Dino Melaye may be saying goodbye to the Senate pretty soon. From politics to entertainment to social media, here are last week’s winners and losers:
WINNERS
James Comey
How does one begin to describe how this man has grown into a near phenomenon in just few weeks after he got fired by President Donald Trump?
He sat before the Senate Intelligence Committee and told the world that the US President is a liar. Although Comey did not explicitly admit that Trump obstructed justice, he gave enough away to have the President call him “a leaker” after the hearing.
James Comey’s hearing pulled a crowd like never-before-seen to the Capitol building, Americans had queued from dawn waiting to be part of this major moment in their country’s politics.
Days after the hearing, we found Comey may get a book deal worth a whopping $100million. Win! Win!! Win!!!
#HalleluyahChallenge
Gospel artiste and minister, Nathaniel Bassey started a praise challenge on Instagram and what first seemed like for-a-select-group-of-Christians has caught fire across the world. On the 12th night, the #HalleluyahChallenge recorded 50,000 attendants who joined in live via Instagram.
The blue and white creative has taken over Instagram feeds and the emphasis has been on the expression Olowogbogboro (the Yoruba name used in describing God’s outstretched arm and his ability to deliver his children from trouble).
The testimonies are wild and life-changing and the numbers are growing daily. Halleluyah!!!
Jeremy Corbyn
Although the Labour leader was unable to win the majority at the UK elections on Thursday, Jeremy Corbyn led the his party to gain 30 seats in the Parliament. Theresa May’s Conservative Party could not win the majority and the UK experienced its first Hung Parliament in a long time.
Corbyn stands as a winner on our list because of the possibility of him emerging as Prime Minister as the hung parliament could force the UK back to another election this Autumn. He intends to thwart Theresa May’s intentions to create a minority government and he made this known in a recent interview: “I think it’s quite possible there’ll be an election later this year or early next year, and that might be a good thing because we cannot go on with a period of great instability.”
LOSERS
Ango Abdullahi
A member of the Northern Elders Forum who has been making divisive statements that are rather disappointing to hear from an “elder”.
Ango Abdullahi, a former Minister of Education declared support for the controversial Kaduna Declaration that seeks to see the vacation of all Igbos from Northern Nigeria.
His statement which has been widely condemned partly read, “These people always pretend that the North is cheating them, not minding the fact that Southern Nigeria was developed by resources from the North.”
It’s not the first time the elder statesman has made polarizing statements but this time, we think he really should be stopped.
Dino Melaye
This senator’s constituents want him out. They are actively demanding his recall from the Senate. Who would have imagined we’d get to a time like this in our country?
Dino may not admit it but he has lost big time.
