Jeff Sessions tendered his resignation letter to Trump in May

Attorney General Jeff Sessions had sent President Trump his resignation letter earlier in May following Trump’s harsh rebuke on him during a meeting in the Oval Office, according to New York Times.

President Trump who rejected the resignation berated Sessions upon learning the Attorney General had appointed Robert Mueller as a special counsel for the Russia investigation.

Trump who slammed Sessions’ appointment of Mueller as a ploy to recuse himself from the Russia probe, called the AG an “idiot” saying he regretted appointing him in the presence of Vice President Mike Pence, White House counsel Don McGahn, and other aides who were in the room.

Trump’s decision not to accept the resignation was borne out of advice from the Vice President Pence, Steve Bannon, and Reince Priebus who all argued that it would only result in more discord both with the administration and amongst establishment Republicans.
