Just In: Boxing legend, Muhammad Ali is dead

Muhammad Ali, the former world heavyweight boxing champion, one of the best-known sportsmen the world has ever witnessed, has passed away at the age of 74.

We told you on Thursday night that the boxing great had been hospitalised in Phoenix Arizona in the US where his rep claimed he was in a fair condition

According to BBC, “he had been fighting a respiratory illness, a condition that has been further complicated by Parkinson’s disease.”

Born Cassius Marcellus Clay, Ali came into the spotlight when he won Gold  in the light-heavyweight competition at the 1960 Rome Olympics.

Fondly known as ‘The Greatest’, the American beat Sonny Liston in 1964 to claim his first world title and rose to become the first boxer to punch his way to a world heavyweight title on three separate occasions.

Ali, who has been married four times, is survived by nine children, including his daughter Laila, who also became a professional boxer.
