Nigeria’s first Executive President, Alhaji Shehu Usman Shagari GCFR, has passed on at the age of 93.
According to a tweet by Bello Shagari, grandson to the late statesman, he died late Friday at the National Hospital, Abuja after a brief illness.

The Sokoto-born politician served as the first and only President of Nigeria’s Second Republic, after the handover of power by General Olusegun Obasanjo‘s military government on October 1st 1979, having won the 1979 presidential election under the platform of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) alongside his Vice Presidential candidate, Dr. Alex Ifeanyichukwu Ekwueme who died barely one year ago.
Shagari who also served seven times in a ministerial or cabinet post as a federal minister and federal commissioner from 1958–1975, was elected for a second term in the 1983 presidential election, but was overthrown by General Muhammadu Buhari in a military coup on December 31, 1983.
