Kemen, Sambasa Nzeribe, Trump, A Trip to Jamaica | See the winners and losers from last week

Most of the major events from last week happened at the tail end of the week and it doesn’t take a thorough examination of the details of those events to know who the winners and losers are. From the Big Brother Naija sexual assault saga to the AMVCA award surprises to President Trump’s Twitter harangue, here are last week’s winners and losers.

WINNERS

Sambasa Nzeribe

You remember the uninvited guest in Wedding Party who ended up holding both the Coker and Onwuka families hostage? The guy with the toy gun? Yes, that’s the one. He was nominated in the same category as Olu Jacobs, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Ramsey Nouah and Femi Jacobs. Scary, right? But the most shocking thing happened. The winner in the Best Actor in a Drama category was announced and it was Sambasa.

The young man was just as shocked as the rest of us. He stepped on stage, burst in tears, prostrated before the great men he had just beaten as they cheered him on and gave a deeply touching speech. Sambasa Nzeribe won the Best Actor award for his role in the movie ‘Slow Country’.

Nnamdi Kanu

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) recorded partial victory last week when the Federal High Court in Abuja struck out six of the charges brought against him.

The charges bordered on “ownership of unlawful society, illegal importation of radio transmitters and researching on how to make improvised explosive devices”.

In appreciation, Kanu went on to call Nigeria a country of savages and animals. Well, we’re grateful for the compliment.

Chika Okpala aka Chief Zebrudaya

The veteran comedian received the Industry Merit Award for years of entertaining audiences across generations. With the award came a car gift of a brand new SUV. Chief Okpala did not fail to crack us up with a few jokes and he even went down the political path with the joke about the MON title he received from the Nigerian government. He said it was MON with no EY.

Chika Okpala also acknowledged comic actor Nkem Owoh (Osuofia) who was equally on stage to support him.

Donald Trump

The last time the US President made it to our winners list was when he was sworn in as President in January. On Tuesday night, President Trump delivered his first speech to Congress and he disappointed critics. He got very positive reviews and his stance was described as “presidential”. We didn’t think that we would experience a time in this life where Trump would impress even the media he condemns on a daily basis.

LOSERS

Donald Trump

Just before the week ended, Trump ruined all the good reports that were earlier recorded about him after another Twitter outrage, this time targeted at former president, Barack Obama. If nothing, Trump offended us by calling our favourite human being names and for this, he’s a loser. But it was more than just calling the former president “sick” and “bad”, he made grave allegations against him. He accused Obama of wiretapping his phones just before the presidential election in October.  Trump tweeted: “Terrible! Just found out that Obama had my “wires tapped” in Trump Tower just before the victory. Nothing found. This is McCarthyism!”

Kemen

Kemen is the Big Brother Naija housemate who got disqualified for touching a sleeping female housemate inappropriately. On top of losing out from the chances of winning the prize, he’s also lost the opportunities that come with the platform, the possibilities of an endorsement deal and a chance at fame.

Kemen is all-round loser and some are even pressing that he gets charged for sexual abuse. From frying pan to fire indeed.

Simi

Simi played herself big time. It’s a simple case of when your fans advise you out of love, just take it, work on it and make a better outing next time. After her performance at Big Brother Naija’s live eviction show two Sundays ago where she showed up on stage looking like a village high school teacher, fans called her out on her fashion choices and she didn’t take it well.

Less than a week after, Simi showed up on the AMVCA red carpet wearing the most unflattering and hideous dress a star can go for, worse off, she had on the same hairdo from the BBNaija performance. Such tackiness! Fans did not hesitate to complain again and she went on a lengthy Twitter rant that did nothing to save the situation.

A Trip to Jamaica

It gladdened many hearts to see that AY’s movie was totally snubbed at the AMVCAs. No awards for bad movies. Simple!
