Ladies, this is probably why your hair is not growing

Styles that tug on your hair can cause trauma to your roots. When your hair style is too tight your strands are prone to snapping off, which is why many women suffer from hair loss around the edges.

Since the exponential increase of African Americans going chemical free, it has been proven that black girls can have long hair. For years, we have made so many decisions that can damage our hair, causing slower growth, but there are some things you can do to grow your hair to its fullest potential.

Too Much Product

Do you find yourself packing on a ton of product? Well this could be the cause of slowed hair growth. In order for the hair to grow, it has to be able to push through your follicle, and using too much product can clog it. When it come to African American hair, our follicle is thinner than others and our hair has to work a bit harder to push through, which is actually why our hair is so kinky. If you are a product junkie, you can still pack on the product but make sure hair is cleansed and exfoliated at least twice a month. This will rid the scalp of product build up, giving your tresses full reign to flow down your back.

Chemical/Heat Overload

Your hair grows in phases and even in a healthy head of hair only ninety percent of your strands are alive. You want to do all that you can to keep those strands healthy and create an environment that promotes growth. Constantly frying your hair with excessive heat and harsh chemicals will slowly but surly kill those live strands resulting in hair loss.

Styles that Cause Trauma

Styles that tug on your hair can cause trauma to your roots. When your hair style is too tight your strands are prone to snapping off, which is why many women suffer from hair loss around the edges. I understand that if weaves and braids are super tight, they may last longer but you want to make sure your natural hair is first priority. Even putting your hair in a tight bun or ponytail consistently can be damaging so try letting your hair flow freely every once in a while!

Prolong the life of your hair by changing a few things in your routine. African Americans can grow hair just as long as everyone else, but our hair is a lot more fragile than most and need some extra care. If you avoid these three common mistakes, you will be well on your way to long, healthy hair.
