The Media Blog: Smooth FM’s breakfast show gets it!

Listening to the radio in Lagos is usually an exercise in madness. You hear about 8 different accents a sentence – a phenomenon some call a charitable enterprise because the recession means that not many Nigerians can afford to travel so they bring all of the abroad to us, one sentence at a time. And some presenters are so determined to make us suffer that they choose to do away with content that is valuable or entertaining and opt for conversation so mind numbingly stupid that anyone who listens is likely to become at least two parts dumber than they were the day before. This is one of the things that makes podcasts so attractive.

However, there’s a show that’s getting things right. Every weekday morning on Smooth FM, Folu Storms and her partner in crime, Sope Martins, deliver chatter that is actually brilliant. They call it the Smooth Breakfast, and if it is a breakfast then it’s a five course “spectacular spectacular” complete with bottomless mimosas. From 6:05 to 6:10 there’s some mystic pizza in the form of an inspirational tale to lift your spirits. From 6:45 – 7:00, there’s some not half bad advice on trading on Stock Market, but the winners have to be Freshly Pressed, from 7:30 -8:00 and The Grape Vine from 8:15 to 8:45.

On Freshly Pressed, you get a review of the day’s headlines that’s miles better than what Channels’ Sunrise Daily has to offer. At the very least, they go beyond reading the headline and the first sentence and asking you to read the newspaper for more. What’s the point of a newspaper review if at the end of it you still don’t know what’s in the newspaper. And on The Grape Vine you get your entertainment gist, complete with inoffensive shade, and a respectable admiration for Wizkid’s clap backs.

The great thing about the show in general is that the two women that host it never sound like they have no idea what they’re talking about. If you’re going to talk about something on the radio the very least you can do is give it a quick Google beforehand. It’s a lesson that Folu and Sope don’t need to be taught, but if they ever decide to host classes on the subject, we’d suggest that Maria and VJ Adams attend.

  1. oooohhhhhh! You didn’t! VJ Adams LMAO!
True though, Smooth FM gets it all day. After Folu and Sope’s, there’s usually the Kazbah for lunch (with music that’s actually worth listening to) and then Sola Thompson’s sweet voice later on for supper.
