The Media Blog: This Vimbai interview will make you think

OnoBello.com might not exactly be a site many people flock to for serious or affecting pieces of journalism. Actually, it might not exactly be a site many people flock to, period. Which is absolutely not meant as a pejorative. The site just happens to occupy a space that has been colonized by BellaNaija.

But, if nothing else, she’s incredibly consistent. Her magazine has seen a (mostly) monthly (online) release since November 2015 – save for a 3 month stint of silence earlier this year – which is more than can be said for most publishers in Nigeria, online or otherwise. (More on this later.)

This month’s issue features Vimbai Mutinhiri and she tells a story that packs a serious punch. While there are a number of noteworthy bits in the interview (being invited to audition for StarGist after being spotted in a mall, plans to produce new TV shows focused on beauty and lifestyle, joining Kwese TV) it’s one part that gets us.

Vimbai talks, with startling honesty and deep clarity about an issue often swept under the carpet in these parts – grief. In a landscape where most celebrity features focus only on the superficial, this, and Genevieve’s interview with ‘Titi K’ have been almost shocking pieces to read.

We say thumbs up to all involved.
