A mother who didn’t feed her baby for 14 hours after leaving him in his pushchair has been given a 12-month community order.

The woman, who cannot be named legally, pleaded guilty to neglect at Derby Crown Court after the father of the 10-month-old child had reported her to social services.

As well as not being fed, the baby also had abrasions and eczema, which may have been the result of not having his nappy changed regularly, the Derby Telegraph reported.

The mother, from Derby, also admitted to neglecting her other child, three, who did not eat for the same 14 hour period.

‘In interview, she accepted her son would have been in a soiled nappy and had been in the pushchair for over 14 hours and held down,’ said prosecutor Sarah Allen.

‘She felt it was the only option because she was feeling unwell.’

Despite giving her a community order lasting a year and 100 hours community service, Judge John Burgess didn’t think her actions were ‘deliberate ill-treatment’.

The children were removed from their mother’s custody the day after the incident.
