Davido just like Wizkid is making international moves. He has released a new song with Rae Sremmurd and Young Thug titled Pere. While this song lacks everything Nigerian previously associated with Davido, he delivers his chorus in Yoruba. The song is produced by DJ Mustard and with the amount of airplay it is getting already, Pere is set to be a club-banger. Despite being a disjointed song, it features an infectious chorus and standout verses from Young Thug and Rae Sremmurd.
Davido skips out on the traditional values of Afro-pop. The same values that made ‘IF’ a monumental success and an African movement. There is no general theme to the story, the lyrics are all over the place and Davido is outplayed by the two supporting acts in his own project.
As a Nigerian or African jam? This song fails thoroughly. As an American record, the song does just alright.
For SONY International Music, it is a win. The song is the number one trending song on Youtube. The massive fan base Davido commands will push the song to the heights it might need to get to but might just not gain him new fans.
