[The Music Blog]: Hear former EME boys Shaydee and Wizkid on “Make Sense”

As the media circus around Wizkid’s explosive Twitter showdown nearly two years ago made rounds, I insistently thought of what will become of Banky W legacy as the man who jump-started their careers. More so, if EME like Chocolate City and MoHits amongst other label crews would be missed, especially after a compilation album as commercially successful as 2012’s Empire Mates State of Mind.

It has been a minute but some of that EME magic is revisited again on Shaydee and Wizkid’s latest collaboration, “Make Sense”. Syncopated thrums of steel pans are beset with an infinite drop of heavy bass, Shaydee sticks to the melody without being overshadowed on a song with a former colleague turned the biggest artist on the continent. Unwittingly, some of that rare feat is owed to Wizkid’s brief albeit effective second verse, it underscores some of the understanding, leftover from their EME days: thou shalt not kill one EME boy on another EME boy’s single.

By the end of “Make Sense”, it’s still hard to tell if EME has been missed. After all, both Skales and Wizkid have relatively remained in the spotlight since their exits from the label. Shaydee, who was one of the last signees the label took on in 2012, also recently concluded the serving for his record deal with the label following the release of his debut album Rhythm and Life. With an independent outlook, new possibilities lie ahead for the vocalist in an increasingly digitised self-publishing world. Unarguably, EME has served its purpose in the lives of these men, Shaydee and Wizkid’s collaboration if anything confirms that at the heart of such label squads, music is still all there is.
