On Wednesday, 24 September, six men were arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, for unauthorised/illegal fishing.

The men, who were arrested by the Nigerian Navy on 27 March, were arraigned alongside their company, Oshine Resources Ventures Limited, before Justice Ibrahim Buba of the Federal High Court, sitting in Lagos.

The defendants, Adekunle Oshingbosi, Momodu Ibrahim, Idowu Tuesday, Yogbosi Christian, Benjamin Ayele and Anthony Mendeho, were accused of fishing in Nigerian territorial waters without obtaining lawful authority.

The EFCC says their crime violated sections 1(1)(2) of the Seas Fishery Act Cap S4, 2004.

During their arraignment, their lawyer, Mr. Kehinde Yekeen, pleaded with the court to grant the accused persons bail in liberal terms, especially in view of the poor health of some of them.

Justice Buba admitted the six accused persons to N10 million bail each with one surety each, who is to produce two recent passport photographs, while also ordering that the accused should be remanded in the Ikoyi Prison, until they meet the conditions for bail.

The case has been adjourned till 27 October, for continuation of trial.
