Nicaragua first lady set to be Vice President in ‘House of Cards’ move

Take a bow Claire Underwood, as first lady of Nicaragua Rosario Murillo becomes her husband’s running mate in the Nov. 6 election.

Ms. Murillo move has a semblance with the script of Netflix Television show, House of Cards.

Many believe the decision by President Daniel Ortega to make his wife his Vice Presidential candidate is a confirmation of her influence in the country’s politics.

The election would be Ortega’s third term bid in a poll he is favoure to win.

Speaking on her mother, her daughter Zoilamérica Ortega said, “Denying something to my mother is a declaration of war”.

“She’s not the vice president; she’s the co-president,” said Agustín Jarquín, who ran for vice president on Mr. Ortega’s ticket in 2001 but was kicked out of the National Assembly without notice once he fell from favor.

Florencia del Carmen López, a street vendor said Ms. Murillo is more popular than the president.

“It’s not that she has as many followers as her husband — she has more. The men are annoyed by it. The majority of her followers are women.”

Sergio Ramírez, who was Mr. Ortega’s vice president in the 1980s said, “There were signals: Little by little, her face started showing up as the face on the political propaganda, at first with Daniel and then alone.

“Now it seems she is looking for political legitimacy. This is an extreme search for legitimacy.”
