The bedridden former Golden Eaglets coach, Willy Bazuaye, who has been suffering from stroke for over 10 years, has received the sum of N500,000 from the National Sports Commission (NSC).

The money was handed to the ailing coach today in Benin by the NSC representatives. According to the NSC Director-General, Gbenga Elegbeleye, who was represented by the South-South coordinator, Yemi Usikaye, the NSC appreciates Bazuaye’s contributions during his active years. Vanguard reports:

He stressed that the commission would always remember those who served the country meritoriously in sports, Bazuaye, who led the Golden Eaglets to its maiden victory in China in 1985, recounted his ordeal with stroke. He thanked the NSC for remembering the contributions he made during his active coaching days. “With what I got from the NSC today, I can only say it will get better, and that I am happy that I could still be remembered for my little contribution to the development of Nigeria,” Bazuaye said.

A former Commissioner for Youth and Sports in Edo, Brown Ebewele, commended the NSC for remembering the former Golden Eaglets coach. “This is truly a new dawn in the NSC. What they are doing is unprecedented and quite remarkable.

“This is not the first time this is happening; I recalled that a round August this year, the NSC also gave a form of assistance to Sunday Eboigbe who is also down with ailment. “You can now see that those who were never active in sports, and are heading the commission are those remembering those who were forgotten by their own colleagues.
