Nigeria marks her 56th Independence anniversary today and there have been goodwill messages from all corners from Nigerians to other Nigerians and from the government to the citizens. Most Nigerians have expressed gratitude for where Nigeria is and hope that there is light at the end of this long, dark tunnel.
There are a few Nigerians who have taken to Twitter to express their disappointment at the sorry state of a country that claims to be celebrating 56 years of Independence from colonial rule. For them, Nigeria has gone from bad to worse since the British left us to govern ourselves and nothing is worth celebrating today.
Here are some of their thoughts:
When I was a kid they promised us Light, Good roads & Water
Now I got a kid they promise us Light, Good roads & Water#NigeriaAt56— Imoh Umoren (@ImohUmoren) September 30, 2016
56 years later we are no longer slaves to the white,we are slaves to our Government and the greed that has eaten up our nation #NigeriaAt56

In 1975, a ticket to London was less than N100 and 75 kobo exchanged for £1. #NigeriaAt56

We are saying Happy Independence day Nigeria. That #NigeriaAt56 is reality but youths are still slaves in their country.#NotTooYoungToLead

Nigeria's independence has correlated to a lack of its people's dependence on it. Happy 56 years of depending on yourselves Nigerians.

Nigeria will be great again.
One of the irritating platitudes that exemplifies the fallacious & devious governance we have had since 1960.— Charles the 1st (@9jaBloke) October 1, 2016
If 56 years post independence, you can't point to tangible achievements – & you are still "hoping", not "planning" – Nigeria has no future.

Please, how is a country where leaders only getting richer & masses keep suffering independent? #GodBlessNigeria #NigeriaAt56

And this last one is hilarious but you can see frustration right through the humour:
Happy independence Day Mr President @MBuhari please stop the vehicle I want to come down. ?
