Nigerian businessman assassinated in South Africa

A Nigeria businessman Monday Okorie, was killed in Potchefstroom, North West Province of South Africa, on Tuesday.

According to the President of the Nigeria Union in South Africa, Mr Ikechukwu Anyene, who made the disclosure on Thursday, Okorie was reportedly shot by assailants.

Anyene said the death of the victim, who hails from Agwu in Enugu State had been reported to South African Police Department and other government agencies.

He said 20 Nigerians were arrested by authorities for allegedly protesting Okorie’s murder and for causing public violence.

He said the incident has been reported to the Nigerian Mission in South Africa, stating that some of the arrested Nigerians had been released while nine who were charged to court were granted bail for free.

“Nigeria Union is satisfied with investigations done so far by the South African police.

“Our people and government are not happy with the way cases involving Nigerians in South Africa are being handled, vis-a-vis the high success rate of prosecution of crime in South Africa.

“We told Nigerians resident in the province to remain law abiding and allow the police to carry out a thorough investigation of the incident,” Anyene said.

This is not the first time Nigerians will be killed this year in South Africa as two Nigerians Gideon Ogalaonye and Nnamdi Michael were killed on July 29 in Johannesburg.

Another Nigerian businessman Ikejiaku Chinedu was killed by guards of a private security in the Limpopo province on July 26.
