No bailout funds for aviation sector – Senate

Senate President, Bukola Saraki, Senate Leader, Ali Ndume and Senator Oluremi Tinubu | YNaija.com

The senate on Tuesday said it would not approve any the provision of bailout funds for the aviation sector.

Senator Samuel Anyanwu had presented a motion entitled, “The looming crisis in the Nigerian aviation industry” urging his colleagues to come to the aid of the ailing sector.

He said, “A couple of weeks ago, Aero contractors, Medview, First Nation, Arik Air and some other airlines suspended their operations as a result of poor economic activities and other surrounding factors affecting the industry.”

In a counter response Senator Ibrahim Gobir said the airline operators should not be given a bailout, as the previous N350bn bailout fund was not properly utilised. He advised airline operators to approach banks for soft loans to keep the sector afloat.

When the motion was put to a vote by President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, it was voted against.

However, the senate mandated its committee on aviation to meet with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to find out ways to solve the challenges in the sector.
