Senator Ndume defeats Ahmed Lawan in mock election for Senate Leader

The brouhaha surrounding the selection of principal officers of the Senate by the All Progressives Congress Senators, yet lingers.

Although the party had in its letter to the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, zoned the Senate Leader position to the North-East, the zone would however, oppose the selected individual.

At a mock poll conducted by the North-East caucus on Wednesday, June 24, Senator Ali Ndume defeated the party’s choice, Senator Ahmad Lawan in a mock poll with nine votes to two.

At the end of a series of meetings, party members from the North-East caucus resolved to go with Senator Ndume over Senator Lawan as Senate Leader.

During the mock poll, Senator Olusola Adeyeye, was unanimously endorsed by the South-West caucus of APC as the Chief Whip of the eighth Senate.

Senator representing Edo North, Francis Alimikhena, was similarly nominated, as the Deputy Whip.

Lawan would subsequently dismiss the polls, saying that he was not aware of it taking place and would rather choose to follow the directives of the party.

He said, “I am not aware of any election. The party has spoken it is now left for the Senate president to make the announcement.”
