North-east senators reject Lawan as candidate for senate presidency seat

One of the contenders for the senate presidency slot, Ahmed Lawan has been unanimously rejected by his kinsmen and members of the North-east caucus in the Senate, saying he is not their choice for the exalted office.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja on Friday, chairman of the North-east caucus, Danjuma Goje (Gombe Central), who was flanked by 10 of the 13 APC senators from the North-east, said the caucus would vehemently resist any attempt by anyone to impose Lawan or any other candidate on it.

According to Goje, what the caucus is only interested oh how it will succeed in persuading APC leadership to officially zone the Senate president’s office to the region, explaining that it is only when that feat is achieved that the group will brainstorm on who should be its consensus candidate and not endorsing anyone.

Goje further disclosed that the caucus met in Transcorp Hilton Hotel on Thursday night where it was resolved that the caucus would consult the party leadership before presenting its preferred candidate for the position. He said Lawan was present at the meeting.

“On Thursday night, at the Kaduna Room of Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, 12 out of the 13 APC senators-elect from the North-east met and resolved as follows: that the North-east APC senators’ caucus for the eight Senate has been put on ground; that the zone is appealing to the APC highest hierarchy to zone the highest position in the National Assembly, that is, the position of Senate President to the zone in view of its peculiar circumstances; and that the caucus should be allowed in consultation with the party leadership to nominate whoever we want for the position.

“Therefore, in the light of the above resolutions, we call on all Nigerians to completely disregard any purported endorsement of any senator from the North-east by any zone for the position yet because any post zoned to us, must have our input.

”We don’t know anything about any endorsement of anybody from the North-east being touted around through the pages of newspapers. We disassociate ourselves from any endorsements from other zones because the party has not zoned any position to us yet and we don’t want to jump the gun,” Goje said.
