Okonjo kidnap: Army carry-out raids, arrest 63 people

by Akan Ido

The search for Professor Kamene Mabel Okonjo, the 82-year-old mother of the finance minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, intensified yesterday with the arrest of 63 people for questioning over the abduction.

Security personnel reportedly carried out raids in a bid to unearth clues that may lead them to the whereabouts of the minister’s mother who was abducted last Sunday in Ogwashi-Ukwu, Delta State.

The Nigerian Army spokesperson, Rosaline Managbe disclosed this yesterday saying, “Yesterday the Four Brigade raided Ogwashi-Ukwu in search of Mama.

“Those arrested are being questioned.”

The police said on Tuesday that two policemen had been arrested on suspicion of helping kidnappers.

Political motives have been suggested for the abduction. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala’s drive to reform a corrupt economy ruffled powerful vested interests, especially fuel importers.
