A 32-year-old man, Mr. Terkura Iorpuu, was arraigned before a chief magistrate’s court in Makurdi, Benue, for raping and infecting two young girls with HIV.
Iorpuu was arraigned on Thursday, 16 October, after the victims, the 6 and 8-year-old daughters of his lover, Mrs. Mson Tor, tested positive for the HIV virus.
His rape of the children was discovered when they started walking in an unusual manner, after which they were taken to Hemko Hospital, Makurdi for medical examination.
The result of the medical examination, brought to light the discovery that the girls were HIV positive and had been defiled through forceful penetration.
Upon questioning, the victims revealed that their mother’s boyfriend, Iorpuu had raped them. It was also discovered that the rapist and the victims’ mother had been HIV positive for over a year and had been using anti-retro-viral drugs.
The magistrate, Lilian Tsumba, adjourned the case till 4 December for further mentioning and ordered that the accused be remanded in prison.
