Opinion: A referendum is better than another Biafra war

The recent agitation from pro Biafrans has become a worrisome affair in the past few months.

Insanity is regaled in support of Nnamdi Kanu, an evangelist of Biafra who is given an accolade and trophy by his followers for his continuous efforts in spreading the doctrine through Radio Biafra.

Indigenous People of Biafra( IPOB) recently ignited a surge in the present administration to release Nnamdi Kanu who is presently in government’s custody.

The vengeful thoughts saturated in South Eastern Nigeria reflects the constant push for secession based on the throes by these citizens towards government’s neglect of the region in the past.

The Nigeria that is formed these days practically listens to voices of a virulent men intending to debilitate the country, a vivid example can be seen in the Amnesty plan for Niger Delta and unfortunately been unable to suppress insurgency in the north.

The evangelist- Nnamdi Kanu- has probably done himself a favor by attracting the government which might offer him a portfolio or any other incentive to shut him up.

Unfortunately, this isn’t a military era where he can be killed or cast into exile. In adopting the local parlance on the streets of Lagos, ‘boju boju’ justice will be granted to him.

Before secession can take place in a country like Nigeria, war is imminent and sincerely I better start dusting my passport because I do not want to get conscripted by the army.

The sound of war is unpleasant and the present Nigerian state can’t save you from its ruins. The army will get divided if a war erupts and sadly, the country doesn’t even have the strongest army.

The North East is plagued with insurgency, there is an increased genocide in the North West through rural banditry, militants are heating up South South with threats of kidnapping and violence and lastly a simmering outburst by Pro Biafrans in South East.

The Nigerian army evidently have their hands full, so the case of a war leaves you and I ‘OYO’( On Your Own).

Apparently, if nothing is done to suppress these rhythm of chaos, it could spread like wild fire and the supposedly power house of Africa can transform into a toilet that is bombarded with feces that has not been flushed for days with maggots and flies feasting on it.

The megalomania and prebendal nature of the country dims the picture of dialogue with stakeholders of MASSOB, IPOB and prominent Igbo leaders in fostering peace and development.

In the short term, a strategy should be put in place in rendering services to South East. Infrastructures like ports, airports, bridges, roads, etc… that could give an average Igbo trader hope in his daily transactions.

The time to put an end to politicizing priorities is now, a fear of secession should not be perturbing. A peaceful referendum should be held in that respect if the surge for secession is becoming a continuum.

A referendum is better than a war. In the long term, a structure should be put in place to reduce the roles ethnicity and religion has played in keeping the country in dark corners.

There is confidence in this present government  to find a temporary solution the movements by Biafrans but a deep follower of Nigerian government and politics will definitely be worried about the future, as a demagogue with money and influence can raise his ugly head to disrupt peace and this time around appointments, contracts or money will not be enough to suppress his efforts.
