Opinion: No matter how good the dream is, it ends

by Yusuf Abdulkadir Hassan

Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one- Albert Einstein.

The New technology (Augmented reality) that aims to fuse digital and real characters into one existence is noble and some might argue it is the precursor to the next phase of evolution where they might not be a physical or mental change in Homo sapiens, the emergence of the humanoids: Robots that look, act, think and speak like humans. Whist this might seem like a script out of a Hollywood Sci-fi script, it is only a pointer to where the world is looking towards.

Let’s come home.

Augmented reality is literally supposed to be a means on improving on an existing reality, improving the way you see, feel and interact with things, events and people.
Our reality isn’t so much of a reality than a series of horrible nightmares.

We do not seem to get it right and sometimes one might be tempted to think that we do not want to get it right. Our realities are so far from our dreams that we sleep at night to the wordings of the latest prevaricated statement we came across during the day.

We as a people have found out that the way out of this mess is to augment our reality and hence we tell ourselves false truths and create catchy catch phrases: Vision 2020 (we are not all blind duh!), best loser, down not out ati bè bè lò.

We need to wake and smell the coffee (or rather the latest imported tea), the world waits for no one and we would be doing ourselves and the generation after us a great disservice if we do not halt this trend of augmenting the miserable reality we face as a nation.

We need to realise that the future should not be put at the doorsteps of the past by blaming them.

We have to realise that as a nation what we really need is re-orientation and not augmentation and finally we have to face the truth: our elders failed and as youths, the upcoming generation now is our time to live, to create, to rebuild institutions torn down. There is only so much hate we can dispense, only so much lies we can tell, only so much realities we can augment.

No matter how good the dream is, it ends.

Now is the time to face wake up from our slumbers, face our realities head on, push the frontiers of what it means to be a Nigerian youth.

Forego pride for grit and who knows what the future would have in store for us ?

Who knows ?
