“People in high places” – Why NFF can’t sack Stephen Keshi

by Mark Bassey

According to the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation, Stephen Keshi cannot be sacked due to the influence of “people in high places”.

After the Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2015 African Cup of Nations, fans and majority of Nigerians have been clamouring for the gaffer to be axed, however, that may not easily happen, going by the comments of the football federation.

While Keshi has indicated to his willingness to continue in his stead as Head Coach of the National team, the NFF is seemingly reluctant to offer him a new deal, with a board member of the federation, reportedly saying that the situation is out of their control.

Referring to President’s Jonathan’s reinstalling of Keshi, the board member stated: “The last time we did what we thought was best, we were forced to revert the changes by people in high places. This time around we are helpless.”

Furthermore, he added: “We are scared of announcing we won’t renew his deal due to what happened last time and unless he resigns or walks away we can’t help out.”

Recently, a top NFF official told BBC Sport that Keshi should walk away from the job. He said: “Walking away honourably would be the smartest thing for Stephen Keshi. It’s pointless to hang around when you’ve failed, have been completely rejected by the NFF and are unwanted by disappointed football fans.”

As it stands, the future of Stephen Keshi, in regards to the Super Eagles remains tentative as unclear signals are being projected by the football federation.
