Police IG restates commitment to uphold citizens’ rights

by Isi Esene

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Suleiman Abba, has directed Zonal AIGs and Command CPs and all Police Officers to uphold the rights of all Nigerian citizens.

Abba made the statement in Commemoration of the International Human Rights Day 2014 and as further proof of his commitment to respect the rights of Nigerians.

IGP further stated that a poignant example of his administration commitment to uphold Human Rights is the recent launch of the Nigeria Police Force Human Rights Practice Manual.

The document was produced with support from Altus Global Alliance, Department of Foreign International Development (DFID), Cleen Foundation, Justice for All Nigeria (J4A) and the Embassy of Switzerland, Abuja.

The Human Rights Practice Manual bears testimony to the Force’s unflinching resolve to expose all personnel of the Nigeria Police Force to practical and theoretical aspects of Human Rights based approaches to policing in conformity with global best practices.

Also, a milestone follow-up to the launch of the Human Rights Manual is the creation of a Human Rights Desk to be manned by Officers in all the formations of the Nigeria Police Force.

Many stakeholders are hoping that these measures will go a long way in guiding the men of the Nigerian police force in handling issues bordering on human rights abuses and citizen engagement.
