Police stops jailbreak attempt in Ebonyi prison

An attempted jailbreak was halted on Thursday by the Police in Ebonyi after inmates of the Abakaliki Prisons protested for hours.

According to a source quoted by Premium Times, two prison officials were killed in the fracas.

It was learnt that the inmates were tear gassed by the police after they had broken through a wall in an attempt to escape.

It was gathered that the Police has also sealed all roads leading to the prison.

A witness also said a firearm was allegedly seized from an official which the police later recovered.

Police spokesperson, George Okafor, said the Command was working hard to resolve the crisis.

“There was an attempted jailbreak and the prisons called in the police. We cordoned off the area and restored nomalcy to the area.

“We will brief you later on the issue once everything have been sorted out.”
