Port Harcourt GRA deserted as police launch manhunt for ‘armed gunmen’

Between 7.00pm to 7.30pm on Wednesday, there was a gun fight between the police and gunmen, suspected to be armed robbers, around the GRA axis area of Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Repeated gunshots in quick succession forced motorists, traders, residents and bystanders to scamper away from the GRA and take cover far away from the scene of the duel.

Owing to the gun exchange, police officers are currently swarming the entire area while some of their colleagues are on said to be ‘on the trail’ of the criminals.

Although unconfirmed, Punch Newspapers reports that the ‘suspected armed robbers attacked a new generation bank located in the area’.

An eyewitness was quoted to have said: “I don’t actually know where the armed robbers operated, but I noticed that some people were running helter-skelter as the armed robbers shot into the air to scare people in order to escape.”

“I also learnt that some policemen were moving in a hurry, probably to catch the criminals.

Meanwhile, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Ahmad Mohammad, confirmed the incident but like the reporters whor eached out to him, he doesn’t have details of the attack, just yet.

“The police are on the trail of some hoodlums. I am not sure now if it is a case of bank robbery or whether it is a house or vehicle that was attacked. I will give you the details later when I am fully briefed.”
