A teenage girl was shot dead by her friend after a prank went tragically wrong, it was claimed.

Premila Lal, 18, was reportedly killed by startled pal Nerreck Daniel Galley after hiding in a closet and jumping out to surprise him.

A neighbour, who did not wish to be named, told the Times-Call she called police around 8pm on Friday after hearing “yelling and screaming” coming from the house in Longmont, Colorado.

Galley, 21, and two of boys – one believed to be Premila’s 15-year-old brother and a 12-year-old relative- were seen carrying her to a car before speeding off, the neighbour said.

The victim was taken to hospital but was declared dead at approximately 9pm, Longmont Police Commander Jeff Satur confirmed.

Galley was arrested on suspicion of child abuse and reckless endangerment at 2.11am on Saturday, according to an arrest report released to the media.

Galley is also suspected of permitting a juvenile to have a firearm.

The charge relates to Galley allegedly allowing Premila’s 15-year-old brother to have a handgun in his possession without the permission of the boy’s parents, which is a felony under Colorado law.

Longmont police are working with the Boulder County District Attorney’s office to determine whether Galley will be charged in relation to Miss Lal’s death.

Premila was a graduate of Niwot High School where she was track star, according to CBS Denver.

Her heartbroken father, Praveen Lal, told the station: “‘My life ended so suddenly and I think it’s going to take a few more days for us to really, you know, comprehend she’s gone.”

He added that he felt no anger towards Galley, from Orem, Utah, who police have requested be held on a high bond as he has no ties to the community or permanent residence.

Mr Lal added: “We lost a daughter, so we don’t want anybody else to lose their son, you know, especially when it was accident.”
