Pres. Buhari’s MTEF narrowly escapes rejection at Senate

President Muhammadu Buhari’s 2017-2019 Medium Term and Expenditure Framework (MTEF) narrowly escaped rejection at the Senate on Wednesday.

Most senators from both the Peoples Democratic Party and the ruling All Progressives Congress had called for the rejection of the MTEF and the Fiscal Sustainability Paper (FSP).

Adeola Solomon, representing APC Lagos said the President’s economic team is in disarray.

“This document we have before us is no document. We should return it to them.

“The Economic Team of the President is in disarray. I say this without being sentimental; I say as a true Nigerian,” Solomon said.

Samuel Anyanwu (PDP) expressed satisfaction that both PDP and APC Senators agreed the proposals were unrealistic; so, the documents should be returned.

Many other Senators also called for the rejection of the document.

But Senate President, Bukola Saraki said the upper chamber could not just return the document as it had a responsibility to “turn them around” through its committees.

“We won’t take documents from the executive and send it back that way.

“Committees should take the comments of everybody and use it to decide,” Saraki said.
