“I don’t need new cars” | Buhari reportedly turns down N400m armoured vehicles

President Muhammadu Buhari has reportedly stopped a move by the State House to purchase five new armoured Mercedes Benz S-600 (V222) cars for his use.

Were the cars to be purchased by the State House, they would cost a total of about N400m, Punch reports.

A Presidency source revealed to journalists on Thursday, July 9, that the President got wind of the plan when the Permanent Secretary, State House, Nebolisa Emodi, briefed him of his ministry’s activities on Wednesday.

Buhari was said to have been peeved by the disclosure, and he promptly told Emodi that the purchase was unnecessary.

He reportedly described a waste of scarce resources, adding that the cars he inherited from former President Goodluck Jonathan were good enough for him.

The President was quoted as saying: “I don’t need any new cars. The ones I am using now are just fine.”

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, would also confirm to Punch Newspapers, that Buhari withheld approval for the purchase of the new cars.
