What President Buhari told INEC, Police during last night’s 5-minute meeting

President Muhammadu Buhari held a brief meeting with officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Nigerian Police Force on Sunday, November 15.

The meeting, which lasted for only 5-minutes became necessary as a result of the upcoming governorship elections in Kogi and Bayelsa states.

Also, the Peoples Democratic Party, had alleged that there was a plot to manipulate the governorship elections, by Presidency and the leadership of the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress.

Consequently, Buhari warned the INEC officials and Police representatives present at yesterday’s meeting against succumbing to pressure from politicians to manipulate the electoral process.

According to the Senior Special Assistant to the president on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, the president warned INEC and the police against all forms of impunity during general elections.

During the meeting which also had Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo in attendance, Buhari also warned against voters’ intimidation during the elections.

“The President called the meeting cited by the PDP to warn in particular, the INEC and the Police to prepare and give the nation a credible election. He said he expected nothing short of a free, fair and credible election.

“He said he had suffered election manipulation in 2003,2007 and 2011 and will not like to have any Nigerian go through that again.

“He warned against the intimidation of voters in anyway and vowed that he was prepared to move with all the force available to him against anyone who undermines the rights of any citizen.

“The meeting was short and straight to the point. It ended after five minutes.”

The governorship election in Kogi is scheduled for Saturday, November 21, while that of Bayelsa will hold on Saturday, December 5.
