A poem on President Buhari’s #TheOtherRoom

by Soyombo Ayomikun

The Other Room!

1. Where ambitions

May be

Quashed,

Where the gods of passion

Ravenously devour,

Where sweat

Drips and

Drops,

The Other

Room!

2. Where snores

Erupt,

Where ‘subconscious’

Reigns supreme,

Where hearts embrace

In sweet flowery dreams,

A daily witness

Of our stark

Nakedness,

The Other

Room!

3. Our fore-fathers

Snuffed out dreams in

The Other

Room,

Of girls that should

Rule,

Of voices that should

Be heard beyond

Our coast-

Silenced forever in

The Other

Room!

4. Who says

The Boardroom

Is the inheritance

Of beings

With hanging balls?

Who says

It’s the fate

Of our girls and

Women

To be forever lost

In the cooking room?

Who says

Our ladies can’t ignite

Our hearts and

Inspire us to

Our bones?

Please,

Let our girls

And ladies and

Mothers

Fly,

Out of The Other Room

Let them fly!

Inspired by a loose joke from the president, this is a reminder to our ‘collective subconscious’ about where The Girl Child and Women generally should be in our society.
