President Trump says Mexico should “absolutely” pay for border wall

President Donald Trump said during his meeting with the President of Mexico, Enrique Pena Nieto, that Mexico should ‘absolutely’ pay for the border wall between the United States and its southern neighbor, Politico reports.

At the G-20 summit in Hamburg, a reporter asked Trump, “Do you still want Mexico to pay for the wall?”

The president responded, “absolutely,” according to a pool report.

Trump also praised President Nieto as his “friend”, following the Mexican president canceling what was one of the administration’s first White House guest visits.

Following Trump’s core campaign promise to make Mexico pay for the proposed border wall, Nieto insisted that Mexico will not pay for the wall, and Trump even suggested the alternative of paying for the wall using solar panels.

According to a White House readout of the meeting, both presidents discussed “the importance of renegotiating NAFTA” and regional issues such as drug trafficking and illegal migration.

According to Politico, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was also present at the meeting, other Cabinet members and aides who were present also are, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, national security adviser H.R. McMaster, adviser Jared Kushner, and NEC Director Gary Cohn.
