A hostage situation in Normandy region of France on Tuesday, turned sour after two men armed with knives killed a priest before being shot dead by the police according to the French police.
Two armed men had reportedly taken 5 hostages in a church even as the motive behind such dastardly act is still unclear.
The hostage takers were shot by the police who arrived and took control of the situation.
The hostages, reportedly a priest, two nuns and two worshipers were taken by the attackers in Saint-Étienne-du-Rouvray, near Rouen.
According to the media, one of the hostages managed to escape to raise alarm and alert the authorities.
One of the hostages- an 84-year old priest, however, did not make it out as he appeared to have had his throat slit by the attackers.
A French interior ministry spokesman said a second hostage was in a critical condition.
Paris prosecutor’s office said the case had been handed over to anti-terrorism judges for investigation even though the motives behind the hostage taken has not been determined yet.
