After releasing victims, kidnappers abduct those who paid ransom

Members of a dreaded kidnapping gang terrorising residents of Port Harcourt, Rivers have been apprehended, The Punch reports.

Nine members of the gang were apprehended on October 12, 2016 by the operatives of the Inspector-General of Police Special Intelligence Response Team in a five-hour raid that day.

Those arrested are Daniel Gabriel (33), Alaso Igodo (25), Akeodi Aselemi (34), Ayibinmotei Livinus (25), Anikuroka Marshal (33), Biebele Elijah (34) Efiye Anda (34), Daniel Lessor (31) and Isaac Reuben (27), all living within the Port Harcourt metropolis.

The gang employed different persons to serve as spotters for prospective victims.

A police source said the gang confessed to have kidnapped four persons in one day.

They also kidnapped a pastor Mrs Ubah on August 10. They made contact with her husband Bishop Ubah demanding a N50m ransom. After negotiations were made it was reduced to N2.8m.

The agreed sum was taken by two brothers of the pastor, Onyeka Ani and Pastor Okezie Akara to the location on August 25.

On sighting them the kidnappers released Mrs Ubah and took the brothers hostage. They demanded another N1m ransom from the bishop for his brothers. But N750, 000 was eventually paid for their release.

The kidnappers were apprehended when one of their cars broke down after they abducted a woman, identified as Mrs. Okotie, few weeks ago opposite the Royal House of Grace Church in Port Harcourt.

They were intercepted by policemen who rescued the woman, and arrested a member of the gang, Gabriel, a taxi driver who provided useful information leading to the arrest of others.
