Republic of Biafra is a dead dream – Garba Shehu gives verdict

Senior Special Assistant to the president on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, has revealed why President Muhammadu Buhari would not throw his weight behind the secession of the Republic of Biafra even though he did the same for the Saharawi people in Morocco.

Speaking to New Telegraph, Garba said that those making a comparison between Western Sahara and Biafra need to be educated in international politics as the situations were different in themselves.

He said “for anybody to make comparison between Western Sahara and Biafra, that is a display of knowledge deficit in international politics. One, Western Sahara is a classic case of decolonisation.

“It is the last remaining colony on the African continent and we all owe it a duty to ourselves to liberate Western Sahara.

“In fact, as military Head of State, President Buhari was the first to recognise Western Sahara and then the rest of Africa followed.

“So, he is being consistent. But Biafra is for the dismemberment of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which is already a settled entity.

“These two scenarios are clearly different.”

He revealed this while answering questions about the struggle for the Republic of Biafra by some elements from the Eastern region of the Nigeria.

On the agitation, he said that Biafra was already a dead dream and as such the people agitating for its returning were chasing shadows.

He said that Nigerians paid the price of the first agitation for secession with a civil war that claimed over a million lives in the country.

He also berated the sympathisers of the Biafran cause stating that they have no information abpout the pilitcal antecedent of the country.

He declared that the Biafran struggle died after the civil war.

“Remember that this country fought a civil war for 30 months in which one million people were killed.

“The issue of Biafra was settled at the end of that civil war.

“What is there again? “It is people who haven’t read Nigerian history and don’t know about it that are trying to raise new dust.”
