‘Cupid Stories’ is the new fourteen track studio album by duo Vast and Smash, better known as Bracket. As the name suggests, it is made up mostly of songs about love. Sure there is the ode to the man above on “My God” and the mandatory how-we-arrived-at-this-point song (‘’Time’’) that our recording artistes inexplicably assume we enjoy so much, but it is in the love songs that the record truly finds it’s feet.
There are all kinds of love songs; some are so ridiculously cheesy, they are good (Me & You, Bro Wale) while some are just unpalatable and refuse to go down well. The annoying “Muah Muah” for instance attempts replicating the magic of past hit “Yori Yori” but fails miserably. Brighter spots are found on “Looking at You” and ‘Champion’, an uptempo mix that finds Banky W hearkening in his fantastic elements.
With the recent hunger for contemporary sounds from the east, the album arrives at an opportune time. They recruited red hot Flavour on ‘’Beautiful Baby’’ and he elevates the song with his rants. They make no meaning to us but we find them irresistible. The highlife infusion continues with the Wizkid collabo ‘Girl’. The cocktail mix of the ultimate pop artiste and the traditional grooves of highlife does not go down so easy. They all put in decent effort but the project looks better on paper as Weezy was a wrong artiste to put on that sound.
As the album heads into it’s final lap, it seems like the duo have run out of steam and they just pile up bland songs to fill up the space. Save for the already released single ‘Remember’ ft. 2face, there is not much worth sticking around for. It is back to ‘Me &You’ on repeat.
As long as human beings exist, the world will always have room for more silly love songs. With this in mind, we will be making room on our playlists for the better melodious tunes on this set while wishing the guys Godspeed in perfecting their sound, but we will not wait around forever.
