Barcelona superstar and Brazilian captain Neymar led Brazil to its first ever Olympics victory in the football event.
Before the Rio 2016 victory, the football event had been the only football competition that Brazil had never won, and they were determined to lift the trophy on home soil.
To that effect Neymar opted out of Brazil’s team to the Copa America to join the Olympics team.
Brazil started the game on a high at the Maracana stadium as Neymar opened the scoring with a cool finish in the 27th minute.
The Germans tried all they could to equalise in the first half but all efforts proved abortive as the Brazilians held on.
In the second half Max Meyer pulled one back for Germany in the 59th minute.
Both teams tried to win the game in normal time but it wasn’t forthcoming. Extra time came and both sides couldn’t find the net and the game went into the dreaded penalty shoot outs.
Brazil held its nerves, winning 5-4 in the shootouts.
