The story centres on how families and relationships are affected by our ever-growing and interconnected online world.

Three plotlines intertwine, all relating to the pressure, loss and trust complications that come with sharing and communicating via the internet, weighing what matters outside the false world of what happens online.

Paula’s character, for instance, struggles with the loss of her baby with Alexander’s character and finds comfort talking to strangers in grief forums, divulging secrets of her marriage and painful emotions she may not even share with her husband.

The movie also stars Arrested Development’s Jason Bateman, who admitted in a recent interview that he jumped at the chance to do something other than comedy.

He said: ‘I’m not invited to do a whole lot of dramatic stuff, so it’s great to take these opportunities when they are brought to me. I’d love to do a lot more of it.

‘The kind of comedy that I am drawn to seems to live pretty close to drama – it’s not super broad. So it’s nice to be able to cross over into a dramatic moment in a scene.

‘Disconnect doesn’t jump into comedy very often. I guess I’m drawn to stuff that feels like something you can see or feel or experience in your everyday life whether it be comedic or dramatic – not too far from the middle.’

The New York premiere of Disconnect proved that the film is hotly anticipated, as stars from all facets of entertainment showed up to support the movie.
